Early retirement just didn’t work
for Lin and Charlie Moss. After leaving the family lumber business,
they soon found themselves walking the Sacramento River Trail “all
day long,” Lin Moss recalls. So, in early 1992, they bought the Country
Kitchen in Town & Country
Plaza off Hilltop Drive. A few months later they bought the competing
Omelet House next door and merged the two businesses.
“We knew nothing” about the restaurant business, Lin Moss recalls. “I
always wanted to run a restaurant…we stumbled and made a lot of mistakes.”
But they had several advantages. They bought businesses with good reputations,
they had basic business sense and a good work ethic and “we didn’t have
to make a living out of it right away.”
More than 17 years later, the Country Kitchen is one of Redding’s most
popular breakfast and lunch spots. You might even need a reservation
for a large party on Sundays, especially after church.
